IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FLOORTRENDS
STORY JESSICA ARSCOTT
While the trend the of white and grey everything is still enjoying popularity, people are starting to shy away from sterile interiors, instead opting for flooring and decor with warmth to create a cozy and welcoming feel.
The current popular design aesthetic sometimes referred to as Granny Chic or Grandmillenial, or even Rustic Glam or Vintage designs, all share similar characteristics in how they create that warm and welcoming feeling; the use of pattern, colour & texture, hand-made and authentic looking pieces, and the incorporation of natural elements.
Pattern & Shape
Patterns are everywhere, and that’s especially true for tile. Black and white patterned floor tiles have been extremely popular and look great when accented with warmer wood tones.
For those who are not a fan of the black and white but love the interest this style adds, you can mix it up by choosing neutrals. Floors aren’t the only space that can take advantage of this look, encaustic look tiles make great feature walls, fireplace surrounds, and backsplashes.
Herringbone is just such a classic style, and you can find it in tile, hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, and even carpet.
Colour
Light Scandinavian inspired rooms with natural – or nearly natural – wood visuals are still extremely popular but we’re also seeing a shift back to slightly richer wood tones that lend more warmth to a space.
White, grey, greige, and other neutral colours with interesting patterns or texture are always classic choices, but colour is bringing interiors back to life! Shades of blue, green, and even pink are popping up everywhere in the home from kitchen cabinetry, to paint, to wallpaper, and tiles are certainly part of that trend.
Area rugs and runners are another popular area to incorporate colour into you home. Whether you prefer florals, geometric, traditional, or abstract, there are so many options to choose from to fit your style.
Hand-made & Authentic
Hand-made tiles with a slightly irregular edge and a varied surface provide a homier feel vs. the omnipresent flat white subway tile. Some options have a very slight variations in the colour and finish that just bounce the light in such a wonderful way. You don’t have to go with a bold colour if you’re more comfortable with white but the handmade look really elevates the look of your space and gives it just a bit more warmth and authenticity.
What says handmade more than a comfy knit?! Get that style with a wool area rug, great for layering over a handscraped and distressed floor that would look perfectly at home in a historic building, or a new build looking to add some personality.
Natural Elements
Fibres like wools and sisals add that natural element and are a popular choice with eco-conscious designers, especially for area rugs and stair runners. Designs that replicate things found in nature, like leaf motifs, abstract agate prints, or beautiful natural stone visuals are also a great way to bring nature into your home design.
Wood with a natural stain or a slightly richer darker stain looks beautiful in any space and is complementary to any colour scheme. White Oak is popular, but options like hickory or pecan have natural variation in colour that are so beautiful and worth another look.
