Outdoor Winter Party Ideas

February 13, 2015 | STORY BY JUDE WAYLAND

Why not celebrate winter by throwing an outdoor party? Cook up some soulful comfort food. Get creative with your décor. Invite the gang, bundle up, build a roaring bonfire, and enjoy the sheer beauty of the season!
Here are a few ideas to help plan your outdoor party and liven up winter.

Stay Warm!

  • Throw a few warm woolen blankets, faux fur throws and soft pillows over hay bales or chairs for comfortable seating.

  • Warm up your décor by dressing chair backs with plaid flannel pillowcases.

  • Dress for the weather. Layer it on! Mitts and hats are musts. Provide a basket of extras for guests.

  • Kill the chill with a menu of piping hot, hearty, spicy food. Chili, stew, soups, and hot drinks (like spiced cider or rich hot chocolate) taste better when they’re cooked over an open fire.

Set the Scene!

  • Take advantage of winter’s snowy backdrop. Hang little white lights in trees or insert strands of twinkling lights into lanterns.

  • Snowshoes, skis and shovels make great blanket and sweater hangers. Use sleds and toboggans as serving platters.

  • Serve a variety of steaming drinks and soups in thermos bottles. Tie winter-themed labels around them.

  • Bake a batch of winter-inspired cookies shaped like mittens, snowmen or snowflakes!

  • Set an informal table using cranberries, pine sprigs, pinecones and natural décor items. Think bright red, rich green and plaid for napkins and accessories.

  • Create a path to light the way. Place hurricane lamps in metal buckets and fill with snow. Hang smaller lanterns in trees or spray paint Tiki torches white.

  •  Use clear glass plates, cups and platters to mimic the look of ice.

This winter, use your imagination and take the party outside!
