When you're at Wits End, there’s no place like home! That’s the moniker the owners have named this Fergus century riverside retreat, where they come to escape from their busy lives. The property was originally built as the carriage house for a neighbouring estate. Constructed of stone, it was faced on the road side with an additional stone veneer that added arched ornamentation to the windows and doors. The home's original bill of sale is on display in the stairwell, revealing the price as two dollars per month, with the option to lease or own.

A renovation in 2014 uncovered the stone inside. Frey Building Contractors recovered much of the stonework, leaving most as it was originally built. They opened up the river view with extensive windows and moved around a number of interior walls to create more usable space.

The home's original kitchen was very small and divided from the living room by a wall. They removed it to create a spacious open-concept kitchen/dining/living space. The entire rear wall, originally stone with only small portal windows, was replaced with a wall of windows to offer stunning views of the river.
A large island topped with quartz is the hub of the house. Cranberry Hill Kitchens designed the space, include a baking station with a river view. An antique freestanding cabinet from My Back Shed showcases the owner's mother’s treasured china.

The décor is French Country, recalling the owners' visits to Provence. The furniture in the dining room and living room is from Accents for Living. Benches flank the side of the metal-topped table creating a casual, country atmosphere. Stone floors by Speers Flooring reflect the colour in the stone walls on the main floor.

The master bedroom is calm and charming with a window seat, comfy sitting area, and Juliet balcony overlooking the river. In the en suite, they created a walk-in shower behind the door, and included built-in storage.
