THE PLACE: Founded by Steve Pomerleau in 2013, FLO Hardwoods specializes in one-of-a-kind, custom-made tables and home furnishings. The focus of FLO Hardwoods is the salvage and reclamation of sustainably sourced or “end of life” raw materials in the form of trees and logs from Essex County and the surrounding areas.
From salvage to finish, the entire process is carefully documented with photos and videos to tell the entire story of every piece that leaves the shop. Distinct and unique design, proper material preparation (years of air drying), top grade professional finishing and attention to every detail are what set these exceptional products apart.
THE STYLE: Clean, modern and unique design is the key focus of FLO Hardwoods custom products. They strive to create timeless works of functional art, while using modern materials and techniques. Live-edge hardwood slabs are the key element in their products, but are usually accompanied by materials such as resin (epoxy), metal, glass and mirror plus LED lighting.
WHAT’S HOT: Live-edge tables with resin accents and the incorporation of LED lighting are one of the fastest growing trends for 2018. Furniture as art is a new attitude. When a piece of furniture becomes the focus of a room by mixing form and function the space shines.
FAVOURITES: Tree root bases and crown tables – where a branch splits into smaller branches – are exciting to create and provide a unique engineering challenge. Oftentimes, due to the size and weight of the base, the structure can hold large and cantilevered sheets of glass so the base is fully visible from all angles. But it’s difficult to choose a favourite.
FLO Hardwoods’ creations cover a wide range of useful, beautiful items – from dining tables to boardroom tables, coffee tables, entry, side and sofa tables, fireplace mantels, benches, lighting fixtures and wall art. The best thing to do is set up a time to come and see their work. Amazement guaranteed.
