THE PLACE: In business since 1987, Window Quilt Muskoka offers an extensive line of window dressings, retractable screens and canopies for the home or cottage. “We really try to encourage people to come to our showroom,“ says owner Ann Vail. “We do free, in-home, on-site consultations, but it’s best to come here because we have such a wide range of products,” she says. “Once we determine what their requirements are, their needs and their reasons for putting window coverings on interior or exterior applications, then we can best advise. We go out to the home and do a measure and a quotation.”

PRODUCTS: An array of interior shades, including fabric samples, can be seen at the store. Automated exterior screens offer protection from insects and the weather, with a full range of motorized options. Shutters that provide security and protection from the weather are also available. “We have interior shades that will give you complete security when you leave the cottage and go home,” Ann says. “We’ll offer you full sun protection. Perhaps you’re looking for privacy.” The shop supplies the famous Window Quilt, an insulated shade that offers some of the best available thermal protection. “We also carry a full range of shutters in vinyl or wood that can be custom-painted or stained to match existing trim.”

STYLE: The shop can match any style, from cottagey to traditional or contemporary.

WHAT’S HOT: “Sunscreens are usually the most popular product because people are looking to maintain that magnificent lake view but are finding that the heat and sun coming in are damaging floors and furniture,” Ann says. Exterior screening products are also in demand. “It’s nice to have an outdoor eating area,” she says. But without screens, insects can be a nuisance at outdoor meals. “We have motorized drop-down screens that can turn your area into a fully usable space throughout the entire day,” she says. “We have lots of weather protection for outdoor eating areas, if it’s cold or windy, or if you want to close your place up in the winter.”
GET THERE: By appointment or by chance.
