THE PLACE: A cottage supply store, popular eatery and spa on Georgian Bay, The Hivehas been a delightful slice of Honey Harbour for well over 40 years. “We’ve got tons of dock space. We’ve got yoga on the deck. We’ve got farmers’ markets. We do a little bit of everything to make it a hub for the community,” says Lauren Patchett, the owner since 2014. As a maritime gateway to thousands of islands on the bay, The Hive is a jumping-off point, a community touchstone and resource. “A place where someone can pick up their groceries, get a really good bite to eat, get a manicure and hit the islands, which is really what it’s all about – being out on the bay,” says Lauren.
THE PRODUCTS:Most goods at The Hive are Canadian-made. Many are local. “We have a lot of wonderful partners in the area,” says Lauren. “We carry décor for the cottage, the cabin or trailer – kitchen items, bed and bath items. We carry furniture, outdoor furniture, planters. We have an apothecary section. We’ve also got a food shop and grocery.”
THE STYLE: “Our most important focus is the people who walk through the door,” says Lauren. “It’s really important that we acknowledge how grateful we are to have their support.” The store’s look is simple and monochromatic with minimal clutter. Its natural surroundings and elements are the highlights. “As much as we love selling products, we’re really focused on Georgian Bay. I don’t think we need to add a tonne of anything to enhance the bay.”
WHAT’S HOT: Kitchen and barware. “Cocktails are still a focus for a lot of people,” says Lauren, because the bay is a magnet for leisure and recreation. Textiles, blankets, throws and pillows are also popular. “Glassware is huge right now.” The cafe’s offerings span breakfast to lunch and from late lunch to early dinner. “Our smoothies are amazing. We have the best coffee on Georgian Bay,” Lauren promises.
