Summer 2017 // Meet Pelham's Pros.

A version of this article originally appeared in the Summer 2017 issue of  OUR HOMES The Niagara Region, p.52. Find local businesses in our Niagara directory.

From atop the Niagara Escarpment, these Pelham pros share their takes on life in the heart of the region.

JANET & DICK HAMILTON

Hamiltons of Pelham, Ridgeville

What is Hamiltons of Pelham? We are a retail outlet bringing to the area a selection of first-quality, affordable home and garden art. The accessories we carry are art-inspired. Combining our travel experiences and appreciation for quality work creates an interesting and eclectic collection of must-have gifts and possessions.

Tell us where your love and interest in art comes from: Our appreciation and enjoyment of art has evolved over time. There is no single starting point. The more you see and feel, the larger the quest for that new and exciting medium or fine piece of work. Our retail outlet allows the artist the freedom to create.

Favourite Pelham landmark? Pelham is constantly changing but Janet has found the very best spot. Drive north on Effingham Street to the top of the hill at Tice Road. The only word to describe the view of Lake Ontario and the Toronto Skyline is “wow.” Nature’s own beauty.

BROTHERS DAVID & JONATHAN TUCKER

Tucker Homes, Pelham

What sets Tucker Homes apart from other builders? Reflecting old-world craftsmanship in the truest sense. We believe in maintaining the legacy of a craftsperson being an artistic creator of the home. As both a designer and builder, we have the staff to provide true craftsmanship in every project. We create spaces with our clients that are functional, beautiful and reflect who they are.

What’s the best part about building a custom home? Not being tied to one way to do things, or one standard to work by. We build what our clients want, however unique or typical they may be. We have our standards for producing homes that are well built, comfortable and long lasting. The rest of the home is determined by a client’s needs and wants.

Favourite place in Pelham to unwind after a day’s work? We’ve occasionally frequented Iggy’s Pub in Fonthill. As lovers of craft beer, it’s a great spot for trying new brews.

BARB, SCOTT, ROB & JEN CHRISTOPHER

Young Sod Farms, Fenwick

Tell us what you do: Young Sod Farms is Niagara’s only local grower of quality turf grass. We also carry grass seed, lawn fertilizer and topsoil – everything you need for a beautiful lawn. We are always willing to share our knowledge and expertise. Our 2,000-plus acres of land are rotated between sod, corn, soybeans and wheat.

How did the family get into the sod business?
In 1958, Robert and Shirley Young had a vision and Young Sod Farms was born. Their daughter and her husband, Barb and Scott Christopher, decided to purchase the family business in 2004 after being involved for many years. The third generation is now following the family tradition. Sod farming is in our blood.

What is the best part of working in Pelham? Being in the same location on Foss Road for almost 60 years, it is remarkable to see the changes over time. This tightly-knit small town has supported our company over the years and in return, we always try to give back to the community. We’re proud to be a part of Pelham.
