THE PLACE: Owner Sylvia Horn opened the doors to Gifted, “a shop where you can find unique ideas for anyone on your list,” in 2015. She chooses items for her shop based on her personal taste and from feedback from her customers. “I don’t think retail should be retailers telling customers what they need or want but rather customers telling retailers what they want,” she says. That means her store is filled with heavily giftable items shoppers will be torn between giving to friends and family and keeping for themselves: kitchen accessories, home décor, some small furnishings, jewelry, fashion accessories, body care products, candles, stationery and paper items, wall art, barware and more. To top off the appeal, about a quarter of the lines Horn carries are handmade locally.
THE STYLE: Modern and quirky, Gifted offers products that shoppers won’t find anywhere else in town. Items are trendy, but not mainstream, says Horn. You might just find a plate depicting a cat in clothes next to a pair of pizza socks on the same shelf. Every corner is a treasure trove of fun and quirk!
WHAT’S HOT: Horn says succulents, a popular décor accent at the moment, are best sellers year-round. Her selection of cards, jewelry and baby gifts are popular, too.
SEASONAL: Gifted carries seasonal décor items for winter, such as wreaths, dishes, entertaining items and doormats, as well as – of course – giftables for everyone you need to buy for: socks, scarves, body care items and games, to name just a few. “This year I’m carrying a new line of onesies for kids and adults from the Drake Hotel as well as a great line of cosy slipper socks from B.C., which I think will be very popular,” says Horn.
FAVOURITES: Horn’s personal favourites are constantly changing. “I carefully curate what I have in the shop and don’t rely on what the industry tells me to buy or what the next trend is supposed to be. If it is something I like, I’ll bring it into the shop. If I don’t like it, I don’t bring it in,” she says. “It’s as simple as that!”
