THE PLACE: Three years ago, Robin Keeler bought a two-storey building in need of tender loving care and moved Twig from its original location near the Bala Bay Inn to downtown Bala. “We renovated it, found a number of surprises along the way, most of them not good,” Keeler says. “We managed to get the building back to where we wanted it to be and we’re really proud of what we’ve done with that.” Her 1,000 sq. ft. store offers fun finishing touches and accents that fit easily into any cottage theme.
THE PRODUCTS: The store carries lanterns, candles, unique hostess gifts, baskets, tabletop linens and wool throws from a wide variety of local, Canadian and international suppliers. “I go to the gift shows, like most retailers, but I sort of have a rule,” she says. “If I wouldn’t have it in my own cottage or in my own home, I don’t buy it. I feel very personally attached to most pieces in the store.” Her sister Mary Lou Dodd crafts whimsical, papier-mâché sculptures.
THE STYLE: “I always say you can never have too many lanterns and too many candles,” says Keeler. “Lanterns and candles are a big part of what we’re all about at Twig. We often have people come in who have just built their cottage or home up here and they’re looking for the pieces to pull it all together. I like to think we can really satisfy that kind of customer.”
FAVOURITES: “If I don’t love it, I’m not buying it,” she says. “So, I really like most pieces here. Lanterns are my thing. I love candlelight and I love lanterns.”
WHAT’S POPULAR: Neutrals are important now, Keeler says. “People want that sense of calm in their home and their cottage and neutrals really do that. They’re very soothing, easy to live with, and you can also add pops of colour if you want to brighten things up.” Black and white is the theme colour combination at Twig. But the store also carries neutrals, sand tones, wood tones and everything in between.
