How do your planters last until winter? We believe in using plants, such as hydrangeas, grasses, ivy and hostas, in our unique, funky and vintage custom urns and containers that can hold up through hot summers and into the fall. They can then be planted in your garden to winter just before the first frost, and will grow again in the spring, adding to your flowerbeds. These worry-free floral displays are also available for weddings and parties. With our interesting combination of plantings, we truly create one-of-a-kind statement pieces for your home.

What are your summer memories? Elaine: Road trips with my sisters, antiquing and picking treasures. Now every time I am out on the road, it is a nostalgic reminder of every journey I have experienced. Ellen: Country drives in the convertible with my mother, hair blowing, tunes playing, a picnic packed and both of us ready for adventure.

TRACEY CARON, OWNER, MIKE PEARCE, BARBECUE EXPERT & LESLIE CARON, SALES & CUSTOMER SERVICE

Collingwood Home Hardware Building Centre

How does Home Hardware help extend summer fun? Our Outdoor Living Department has many items to stretch your summer fun beyond Labour Day. So enjoy the outdoors until the snow flies with these great items to warm your patio. This tabletop propane fire pit is made of heavy-duty steel and a tile top. The fire pit has lava rocks and a screen. To keep your guests’ legs warm, give them a Scottish wool throw. If your crowd is a little larger, maybe a propane patio heater would be better suited. It has a 10-foot radius, with 41,000 BTU output and is available in a variety of styles and finishes. It’s great for warming a larger space.

What do you look forward to in the summer? Tracey: Glamping in our trailer in Awenda Provincial Park, walking or biking the Georgian Trail and evenings spent with family around our fire bowl, enjoying the summer sunsets.

Eagles Weed Control & Lawn Service

How do you help a lawn last? With proper care, a beautiful lawn can last until the first snowfall. Our team specializes only in lawn care and we can guide the customer with an individual care plan to keep your grass healthy, weed-free and green. If you are establishing a new lawn, we also offer hydro seeding to get a quick start finishing your outdoor space. Our expertise also extends to eliminating the bugs that might be enjoying your lawn more then they should be!

Tell us what summer means to your family: We have always supported local summer sports in the valley and have enjoyed watching baseball and soccer games in Thornbury. There is also nothing better than dusting off the Harley and riding throughout the valley, enjoying all the beautiful vistas that this area has to offer.

CHARLIE, GREG & TOM MACDONALD

Macdonald’s Brandsource Furniture & Appliances

How can the Big Green Egg extend Barbecue season? This eco-friendly barbecue uses old-school charcoal. From steaks, fish, roasts, turkeys to pizza and cookies, it’s incredible! You’ll be cooking outdoors 365 days of the year. It makes food taste that good.

What does the Macdonald family do in summer? Greg: In a world of big box retailers we’re proud to be a successful family-owned store here in Meaford. When my father Charlie and uncle opened 64 years ago, they didn’t have the competition we have today. But we still make time for family. My kids, Tom and Tara enjoy fishing and rafting on the river. And I still remember the days of waterskiing behind my dad’s old boat. Meaford is a great place to grow up, live and work.

PRESTON OWEN, OWNER & SHARON OWEN

Thornbury Clear Choice

How does a hot tub extend summer mode? Many people think of hot tubs as something you use in the cooler months, but they are a year-round spot for you to relax and enjoy some hydro and massage therapy. We suggest to customers that the temperature can be turned down in the summer months and then it can be used like a pool. For 27 years, Clear Choice has been offering a great selection of hot tubs, as well as water analysis and repairs. We also have a complete line of pool and spa chemicals and accessories for customers to get the most enjoyment from their pool or hot tub.

Share some of your favourite summer memories: Boating and fishing on Georgian Bay were a big part of summer. Cruising, swimming and fishing that lasted the whole day. Many times, coming back to the harbour in Meaford, sound asleep on the deck of the boat. Now we are happy to be in our backyard oasis, with a hot tub and pool that is within walking distance of the Bay.

Does a gas fire pit need to be winterized? This gas fire pit is specifically designed to be weatherproof. It has stainless steel parts and different burners and ignition made for windy and wet locations. It works perfectly on a still summer night and equally well on a breezy fall afternoon. Shovel the snow away in the winter and you can still enjoy the ambience that the fire pit creates. They are available in many shapes and sizes, so you can fit one into just about any yard. At Chantico we have 30 years of experience in design and installation to help you build the fire pit of your dreams!

What do you enjoy about summer? Just being outside is great! Last summer I built a fire pit in my back yard. It has been a very nice addition to my outdoor space. It gives me a place to relax at the end of a busy day with a cold beer in my hand, watching a mesmerizing fire, with s’mores at the ready. I will still be using it after the snow flies.

JEN CUDDIE, OWNER

Cuddie Landscape Planning Inc.

How do you help a garden keep looking its best? It all starts with a landscape plan that addresses the needs and lifestyle of the client, and any issues on the site. Gardens look best when the plant material selected suits the location, and there is plenty of texture and seasonal interest. I like to use trees grown at Clearview Nursery as they are used to the wind and tough soil conditions around Blue Mountain.

Share some of your summer memories: Being at the cottage with my family. The soil and exposure in Bancroft and back at home in Stouffville were very different. I planted with my Mum and learned a lot about what plants work in certain areas, and what plants don’t. Mum introduced me to Japanese Spurge, one of my favourite groundcovers to this day, for tough locations like under our big hemlock tree. Those summers spent gardening inspired me to become a landscape designer.

TIM POTTS, YARD MANAGER & MORGAN ANDERSON, CO-OWNER

13 Forty Landscape Supplies

How can you help a garden last? Top dress your garden beds with our triple mix and work it into the soil to add nutrients and improve the soil structure. To hold moisture in your garden beds, add our mulch. It will also help in weed control, insulate plants and prevent frost heave. Aim for a layer that is three to five inches deep. We also carry a wide variety of aggregates and natural stone, including Permacon and Navascape products for your garden projects.

What do you look forward to in summer? Having grown up in this area, summer is the time to be close to the water. Lake Eugenia and Georgian Bay offer great spots to sit and appreciate the beauty and peacefulness.

ADAM FULFORD & BRETT LENNOX, OWNERS

Imagine Design Construct

How will this deck stand up through the year? This deck was built using Azek Deck Boards, which are made from high-performance materials that are built to last and is an excellent alternative to wood. The product was made to withstand harsh weather and is perfect for our area. Resistant to mildew, moisture, stains, scratching and fading means your deck will look beautiful longer. It requires no annual staining or sealing, so you will be enjoying your deck – not working on it – all summer and into the fall. The railings feature a Regal Railing system made of aluminum with glass inserts. We love to build decks using these materials as we stand behind the product, and know our clients will enjoy their outdoor space for years and years to come.

What do you do in the summer? This is our second year in business, so most of our summer will be spent working. When we do have time off, we enjoy taking advantage of this beautiful area that we are lucky to call home. We enjoy spending time with friends, family and our dogs Malkin and Lincoln.
