Style Rules this Family Compound

August 08, 2017 | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SANDY MACKAY

On the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, this estate was built to fuel family.

A new spin on the modern family cottage awaits at this property on Kempenfelt Bay. Two homes, one for Josh and Sarah Mandell of Avenue A, and one for Josh's father, right next door. "It was always intended as a family compound," says Josh, who grew up cottaging in Simcoe County. The six-acre waterfront estate is home to six: Josh and Sarah, their twin daughters and Josh's father and stepmother.

Sarah's favourite room of her 3,700 sq. ft. home is the great room, outfitted with an Indiana limestone fireplace that reaches up to a tongue-in-groove cedar ceiling and a number of exposed Douglas fir beams and trusses. Everyone can also enjoy a million-dollar view of Kempenfelt Bay beyond a wall of windows in the great room. An impressive kitchen with matching island slab and countertops that complement a subway-tile backsplash, well-equips their family for entertaining the masses, with hookups by Johnstone Plumbing Ltd..

The master suite is on the ground floor, and all of the bedrooms, except one guest bedroom enjoy individual and unique balconies. Barrie Trim & Mouldings Inc. supplied all the doors, trim and railings in the home.

Across the way,  Josh's father's 3,400 sq. ft. residence enjoys a Cape Cod aesthetic on it's exterior and inside is primarily furnished with products from United Lumber Home Building Centre. The kitchen of this home is tucked away from the 10-seat dining area. Coffered ceiling beams in the great room- a few steps below the dining area- match the Douglas fir mantel, and warm the calm white walls, painted in Benjamin Moore's Cloud White with Simply White painted trim.

Upstairs, an expansive master suite was designed to maximize sunset and bay views. The stone fabrication throughout the home was completed by Discount Granite Plus, and the tiles in the grey marble bath were sourced from Desert Tile

A new challenge awaits this entrepreneurial duo. Seeking another double lot in the same area, the Mandell's are looking to build another family compound, hoping to "do it all over again," as Sarah says. This young family is looking ahead to bigger and better things.

Josh and Sarah Mandell. A talented duo – he’s the builder and she’s the designer.
