Settling down in Southern Georgian Bay, builder and trained pastry chef James Woodcock of TDI Construction and his family renovated a Thornbury property to accommodate their growing needs. What was once an outdated fixer-upper has become a testament to balancing style with everyday life.
A style that can only be described as rustic, modern and organic is evident throughout the home. The original home’s lumber is used as accents and is combined with Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White and Revere Pewter neutral walls. The homeowners collaborated to produce a well-loved kitchen area that is both bright and functional. The home is flooded with natural light, thanks to updated windows and doors from Knights' Home Building Centre.
The four-level home includes an extension that made room for a spacious living room, larger master bedroom and a basement playroom for the kids. Skylights in the attic brighten the space during the day, and at night the family can hold movie nights lit by the stars.
Rustic-looking pine flooring was selected to withstand small children and an energetic dog, and was sanded down and stained in the bedrooms and main living areas. The basement playroom’s neutral colour scheme makes way for the children’s art and features an eye-catching primary-coloured stairs with a wooden slide.
Outside, the space was designed for entertaining. At the base of a wooden arbour, a Boston ivy climbs across to shade the dining area.
Creativity shines throughout the home. “If you don’t fight the renovation process," says James, "and just let it take its own course, the end result can always be fun.” The result of this redesign is a playful, bright and fun place to live everyday life.
